February: Cultivating a Mindset for Success

February 1, 2014 By Alison Monahan Leave a Comment

Mindsets for successWe talk a lot on the Law School Toolbox about the nitty-gritty details of learning the law: outlining, exam writing, and so on.

For February’s theme, we’re taking a step back to look at the bigger picture:

  • What habits of mind tend to lead to success?
  • How can you develop these mindsets, if not all of them come naturally to you?

We’ll go ahead and warn you that some of the posts this month might raise your ire! It’s not easy to acknowledge that your ingrained ways of thinking aren’t helping you succeed.

But there’s good news — taking this stuff seriously can supercharge your learning, and your life.

If you’re willing to give it a shot, stay tuned!

August: Project Managing Your Law School Career

August 1, 2013 By Alison Monahan Leave a Comment

Juggling law schoolAfter watching way too many law students drift through three years of school — only to be unceremoniously ejected into the cold, cruel world at the end — our August blog theme seemed fairly obvious: Project managing your law school career.

Why? Because no one is going to do it for you! You’re the master of your own career, so time to get with the program.

What will be covered?

As any good project manager knows, you have to keep all the balls in the air while still maintaining positive momentum towards the ultimate goal. Easier said than done.

This month, we’ll talk about the nitty–gritty aspects of time management and getting stuff done, but also about larger topics such as setting useful goals and nailing down your own definitions of success.

Because, if you don’t know where you’re going, how are you going to get there?!?

We’ve also got some good guest posts lined up (and we’re always open to ideas), so stay tuned!

Everything you need to know to keep your law school career on track is coming right up.

July’s Theme: 0L to 1L

July 1, 2013 By Alison Monahan Leave a Comment

0L to 1L If you’re starting law school soon there’s a good chance you’re feeling a little bit anxious. Don’t worry, that’s normal! Law school’s a big step, it’s very expensive, and there’s a lot of conflicting information out there.

We’re here to help you sort through the noise to find an approach that works for the way YOU learn.

Starting this July, the blog will be organized around monthly themes. Our first theme is the 0L to 1L transition — in other words, how to get ready to be the best law student you can be. If you’re not sure what you should be working on this summer, or how to best prepare, tune in!

We’ll be talking about lots of different aspects of the law school experience: academic approaches, mental readiness, personal concerns, and more. As law school tutors and instructors, Lee and I have heard it all. Now we want to share some of our accumulated wisdom with you.

We hope you enjoy our July theme, and if you have questions don’t hesitate to let us know! We’re at your service.
