The break is over and the new semester has begun! Time to get into the grind of law school yet again with classes, studying, and outlining! However, you aren’t exactly ready to dive into your stressful and hectic schedule. What are you to do?? Personally, I use songs and music to help get me pumped up and motivated! For example, I have curated a list of songs to help you get through exams. One of my favorite musicals (and one that has been very popular in pop culture in recent years) is Hamilton. This musical uses a unique blend of genres to create some banging hits all about Revolutionary-Era America and one of our founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. These songs get stuck in my head frequently and constantly make me feel ready to take on the world! So here are 10 Hamilton songs to help get you motivated for the new semester.
Please note these songs are in no particular order, so listen in whatever order helps you the most!
Now that classes have begun again and you are in the hustle and bustle of law school, you will be studying ~non-stop~. Jokes aside, this song is a great way to pump you up for the start of the new semester. This song has a great beat and even has some legal jargon in the lyrics. And no, you do not have to write like you are running out of time to pass your classes!
What Comes Next?
This is one of King George’s infamous solo songs. It is the perfect dose of sassy that you can sing to yourself during class when your professor seems to be droning on. Or you can hum this while creating your attack outline. What comes next after this topic? What is the next step in your analysis? Before you know it, you’ll be done with the war (your final exams).
Take a Break
Like Alexander Hamilton, many law students push themselves to work hard while constantly studying and preparing for classes. Sometimes when your nose is to the grindstone, you do not realize how stressed or overwhelmed you are. Thus, it is always good to get a reminder to take a break. One of the best ways to combat stress is to give yourself a breather and allow yourself to relax! So take Eliza and Angelica’s suggestion, and take a break while listening to this song.
This is a less exciting song, however the melody and lyrics are excellent and the perfect amount of sassy. It reminds me of getting into debates during class discussions about what a case is actually about. And just imagine telling the resident gunner, “My dog speaks more eloquently than thee”, priceless!
Say No to This
We have all been there, it is late at night, and you are weak and defenseless. You are in the middle of studying for class the next day and your best friend texts you “Drinks?” How are you supposed to say no to this? Hopefully this song will teach you that sometimes no is the right answer.
That Would Be Enough
Sometimes it is not best to work as hard as you can but instead to work smart by doing sufficient work without hurting yourself. This slower song is a good way to remind you that you do not have to overwork yourself to be successful and happy. Just remember that mastering the law is not a requirement of law school. Working hard is a good thing, but working yourself to death can be detrimental to your health.
The Story of Tonight
This is a great rallying song. You can sing it with your law school besties while studying late at night and dreaming about after you graduate and become attorneys! You can dream about the inevitable happy hours together and nights celebrating. Raise a glass to you and your future success.
Imagine yourself as Alexander Hamilton and think about your situation while listening to this song. It is an excellent way to motivate yourself to push through and take the opportunities that have been presented to you. Maybe it is a leadership role in a law society. Perhaps it is an internship offer. Or it could be as simple as participating more in class. This will help you step up and pursue the things that will help you in your future. Are you going to miss your shot?
Blow Us All Away
This song has great musicality and will get you excited to start the new semester (so long as you don’t challenge someone to a duel). It will remind you that your loved ones are anxiously anticipating your future success as an attorney and supporting you throughout law school! The world is waiting for you to blow us all away.
Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story
One of my favorite songs in Hamilton is the last one. It is a reminder that you are making history every day and you can accomplish amazing things. It can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when you are going through the mundane motions of law school. However, every day you are taking one step closer to achieving your dreams and becoming an attorney. Take in every moment of this exciting experience. Also, spend every day working hard, creating your story, and becoming who you want to be. Best of luck this semester in continuing your law school journey!
