Woohoo! You survived another semester of law school! The last several weeks have been filled with all-day studying, preparing, and testing. Time to put away the worries and stressors of law school and focus on things that really matter, right? Well… sort of? While it is important to catch up on the R&R and see your friends and family, breaks in law school are also a really crucial time to plan for your legal future. In short, it is time to make some money moves! Breaks from law school are the perfect time to get ready for your next step in your legal career, including landing a legal position. It is important to gain experience and exposure to the legal field as law school (fortunately) does not last forever. However, getting a legal job can be tricky and how is a law student supposed to find time during the busy school year to do everything to prepare for a legal position? Never fear, I have some great tips for you to help maximize your break in order to score a sweet legal position.
Spruce Up that Resume
How do you expect to land an amazing legal job without an kick-butt resume? You shouldn’t, unless you are Elle Woods or the notorious RBG. Your resume is one of the most important documents that you will ever create. It is the introduction of your best qualities and experience to potential employers that highlights why you would be a great fit for their position. Unfortunately, whether you get an offer can be dependent on the strength of your resume. Thus, breaks from law school are the perfect time to start sprucing up that resume! You can take this time to add new information, reformat, or even have others review your resume to make sure you are painting yourself in the best light possible.
One great way to help land a legal position is to take advantage of some networking events. Law firms, other legal professionals, and law associations know that law students are significantly less likely to come to events when they are busy in school (or worse, studying for exams). Thus, many networking events are scheduled for long weekends and breaks from school. This helps maximize attendance for both the law students and legal professionals. These networking events are excellent ways to make connections in the legal field in a more casual way. Many employers go to these events to scope out the job market so they know what is out there when they interview for their summer positions. You will be able to ask questions, meet potential employers, and get your foot in the door with people who may one day be your boss.
Take Advantage of the Sales
In order to land the job of your dreams, you also need to dress the part! Whether it is a new outfit for an interview, or some nice suits for a new job, you will want to be dressed appropriately and professionally. However, professional wear can be very expensive, especially if you do not have a job or flexible income. This can be quite a dilemma for someone who is trying to land a new position! Fortunately, many stores have continuing sales from the holidays well into the beginning of the year. This is the perfect time to look at your wardrobe and see what pieces you are missing. You can take advantage of these sales and stock up on some great outfits at a reasonable price. Having the perfect professional wear that makes you feel confident and feeling good is an excellent step to help you land a legal position or be ready for your next legal job.
You cannot be your best self unless you set yourself up to be that person. Mental health is extremely important and this is something that law students tend to forget. Law school can take a huge blow to your well-being. So, it is time to take a deep breath and take a load off. Although relaxing may seem counterintuitive to “scoring a legal position,” it is actually a very crucial task to complete during the break. Burnout in law school is something that plagues many law students. If you don’t take the time to take care of yourself, you put yourself at a disadvantage. You are less likely to be focused, work as hard, or even be motivated to do what is necessary to land a legal position. Thus, make sure to take the time to relax during the break!
Get Pumped for the Next Semester
Having a positive attitude about the school year and getting yourself in the right mindset can do wonders for your self-confidence, productivity, and motivation. When you are able to start the semester off on the right foot, you will be amazed by the accomplishments that you will undertake throughout the year. This includes being able to apply for positions, nail your interviews, and get a job offer. Although the start of the new semester can be stressful, you can be successful and will be able to have a great year, as long as you set yourself up for success. You have the tools to be your best self, I know that you can do it!
