Get Some Sleep

April 7, 2025 By Alison Monahan Leave a Comment

Get Some Sleep

I’ve never been the world’s greatest sleeper (being a night owl in a world that plans things before 10am doesn’t help), but law school took my sleep issues to a whole new level. I tried to be responsible and practical during first semester exams, and carefully planned my daily study schedule to include eight hours of sleep. Nice plan, until – night after night – I’d go to bed and lay there for three plus hours, unable to fall asleep while my brain tried to process the nuances of Civ Pro, Contracts, and Torts. After several weeks of this, I was a real mess! I was getting way less sleep than I needed to function, and I was super frustrated, which definitely didn’t help me sleep. I came back to school after Winter Break clinically depressed, and I’ve always thought the lack of sleep was a big contributing factor.

We know a lot of law students struggle with sleep, so we’re excited that April is “Get Some Sleep” month at the Law School Toolbox. (Maybe we should send out cozy socks and Sleepy Time tea?) Lee has a great two-part podcast episode with sleep expert Lindsay Scola. The first talks about the details of sleep – why is it important, and what can mess it up? And the second talks about some common (and less common) sleep disorders. If you’re struggling to get the sleep you need to perform at your best (don’t forget sleep is when we consolidate memories!), don’t miss these episodes. I know they would have come in handy for me, when I was staring at the ceiling for hours on end, trying to turn my brain off.

We’re also excited that our 500th podcast episode will be released this month! When we started recording years ago, I’m not sure either of us would have ever expected people to still be listening at this point, but we appreciate it (all 3,500,000+ downloads). Thanks to everyone for listening and reaching out with ideas and comments. (You can also tune into our newer YouTube channel, if you want to put a face to the voice.) For the 500th episode, we’re talking about AI and the future of legal education and practice, so tune in for some new ideas and thoughts about the world we’re rapidly moving into. (No, Claude didn’t write this, but he might be able to help you learn the law and prep for exams.)

As we move into April, and full-on spring, we hope you enjoy our new content! Good luck to everyone preparing for law school exams, and for graduation. If you need some study inspiration, check out these resources:

Happy Spring!
