Favorite Con Law Supplement: Chemerinsky’s Constitutional Law: Principles and Policies

Have you ever heard of Erwin Chemerinsky? He may have written your Constitutional Law textbook. And he may be your law school dean (if you go to the University of California, Irvine). He is well-known as a constitutional law expert, having written many books and argued many important appellate cases. He was even my bar review lecturer on constitutional law when I was studying for the bar exam. He did his entire six-hour lecture from memory, with no notes. No kidding, this guy is incredibly impressive in so many ways.

However, my love for Erwin Chemerinsky began when I picked up his Constitutional Law: Principles and Policies book my second year of law school. This book is big (and heavy) but it is one of the best and easiest to understand digests of constitutional law I have ever read. He takes what at times can be complicated concepts and makes them simple to understand. He talks about cases and makes clear what the takeaways are from each case and how the overall jurisprudence fits together. I recommend this book to every student I know for Con Law. I refer to it with students in my one-on-one tutoring sessions. And it helped me get quite a high score in my Con Law class. Basically, it is the best.

This supplement focuses on the substantive law. You won’t find hypos or practice questions in this supplement. However, it is still worth its weight to carry around and read on a regular basis. Seriously, I have never had a student regret buying this book. Students tell me it is still very helpful, even if Chemerinsky didn’t write their textbook. So check it out, I am pretty sure you are going to find that it is a huge help.

(And guess what? I just found out there is now a Kindle edition! You don’t even have to carry around this huge book anymore!)
