Getting a Jump Start on the Summer Job Search: Part II

December 17, 2018 By Kala Mueller Leave a Comment

GETTING A JUMP START ON THE SUMMER JOB SEARCH: PART II‘Tis the season to be jolly, or, if you’re a 1L, to breathe a deep sigh of relief that you made it through your first semester of law school. Congratulations! It’s no small feat, and I certainly hope you will take some time to enjoy a much-deserved break. However, if you don’t already have a summer job lined up, there are a few things you can do to make productive use of your time off after you’ve finished binge-watching the next installment of Making a Murderer or Bodyguard (highly recommended).

Back in June, I wrote about what incoming 1Ls could do during the summer to set the stage for the 1L job search. If you haven’t done any or all of these things, now is a great time to tackle them. Below you’ll find further guidance for both 1Ls and 2Ls on each of the areas covered in the original post, along with a few additional suggestions.

August 6, 2018 By Kala Mueller 2 Comments

Books to read before law schoolThere is no shortage of recommended reading lists for incoming 1Ls, but they tend to focus more on preparing you for the law school experience and not so much on professional development and career exploration. So read some books from those other lists, but read some of these too. [Read more…] about Preparing for Your Legal Career: 10 Books to Read Before You Begin Law School

Getting a Jump Start on the 1L Summer Job Search

June 18, 2018 By Kala Mueller Leave a Comment

Ahead of the Curve post on making the most of your summer by laying the groundwork for a successful first legal job searchMany students arrive at law school feeling uncertain about what they want to do with their law degree and often need some time, self-assessment, and experience to figure it out. Still, it’s not too early to begin thinking about your career goals and, on a smaller scale, your post-1L summer job. Whether you know exactly what you want to do with your JD, have absolutely no clue, or fall somewhere in between, there are a few things you can do now to help set the stage for what will likely be your first legal job search.

I know that some of you are thinking, “But, I’m a busy person, and I don’t have time to think about next summer when I haven’t even set foot in a law school classroom.” Look, I may not know you or what you’ve got going on right now, but I am confident that the majority of y’all are about to get a whole lot busier than you are at this moment, so just trust me when I say NOW IS THE TIME. If you want to learn why that’s the case and what I’m suggesting you do this summer (I promise it’s nothing too strenuous), read on.
