Restaurant Law 101

May 29, 2020 By Hillary Vaillancourt Leave a Comment

Restaurant Law 101When I initially went to law school, I had some vague ideas about what I wanted to practice. I wanted to help people or animals or both. I took classes in those subjects as much as possible. But, when I graduated during the recession, job prospects were hard to come by, and I took a job at a small firm handling mostly real estate law.

During my early law career, I started a little home bakery on the side, really as a hobby. I loved to bake and decorate cakes and cupcakes and figured I might as well earn some money from my hobby. I also loved to go to food stores, especially unique natural food stores. And, I was constantly watching food shows in my free time. [Read more…] about Restaurant Law 101

Introduction To Landlord-Tenant Law

Introduction To Landlord-Tenant LawIf you are in law school, chances are pretty good that you’re renting an apartment or a condo, so you are already somewhat familiar with this area of law even if it is not formally taught in depth at your law school. In my experience, property law classes tend to focus heavily on ownership rights and very little on leasehold rights.

As a renter, you are entitled to certain benefits, and your landlord is required to fulfill certain obligations. If either party fails to perform as necessary, there are various levels of consequences. [Read more…] about Introduction To Landlord-Tenant Law

What To Do When You Are Thinking About Dropping Out

What To Do When You Are Thinking About Dropping Out

My entire academic career, I earned top grades without having to put in much effort. But, when I began studying in law school, that all changed. I suddenly found myself having to work extremely hard for a ‘B’ instead of breezing through an assignment to an easy ‘A.’

There were a variety of reasons why this was the case. I don’t learn well in an environment using the Socratic method. I am not an auditory learner and therefore had difficulty keeping up with the subjects. I also found I really wasn’t terribly interested in the subjects. I wanted to learn about how to fight social injustices, how to advocate for animals, children, and the poor. I was not the least bit interested in learning the Rule Against Perpetuities.

Before heading home for Thanksgiving break, I considered dropping out of law school altogether. I wrestled with the decision secretly for weeks wondering if I really was meant to become a lawyer. After much thought, I realized I did want to practice law, and I decided to stay in law school.

If you, too, are considering leaving law school, here are some things to consider first:

Why You Should Maintain Your Law School Connections

January 6, 2020 By Hillary Vaillancourt Leave a Comment

Why You Should Maintain Your Law School ConnectionsIn law school, you have or will spend a considerable amount of time with your classmates. Between hours in classes and study groups and the occasional happy hour, law students inevitably are constantly around each other. But, what happens when you finish law school? It may be easy to go your separate ways, but even if you weren’t best friends with a lot of students, it’s important to maintain your classmate connections. Your classmates will go on to perform jobs or field client requests that could be extraordinarily valuable to you and your own practice.

Here are three reasons why maintaining those law school classmate connections can be hugely advantageous for your career.

Five Careers For Lawyers That Aren’t Practicing Law

Five Careers For Lawyers That Aren't Practicing LawWhen I went to law school, I knew that I would benefit from having a law degree. But, I wasn’t entirely sure how I was going to use my J.D. I knew I wanted to be an advocate for a cause I could be passionate about. I wasn’t entirely sure what that might look like, and I was open to opportunities that might not be the traditional practice of law.

Turns out, there are lots of careers that benefit from having a law degree even though they’re not practicing law. Here are a few: [Read more…] about Five Careers For Lawyers That Aren’t Practicing Law

How To Manage Relationships While In Law School

November 13, 2019 By Hillary Vaillancourt Leave a Comment

How To Manage Relationships While In Law SchoolBalancing anything with law school is always a challenge. The demands on your time have probably never felt more significant than they do now. It can be more difficult to find free time to spend with the ones you love, and even if you do find the time, it’s hard not to bore them by talking about law school constantly.
