How To Find Summer Jobs That Aren’t Advertised

July 21, 2021 By Hillary Vaillancourt Leave a Comment

How To Find Summer Jobs That Aren’t AdvertisedA few years ago, there was a Twitter storm of people debating the worst career advice they’d been given. I was shocked to see one of the pieces of advice most heavily criticized was cold-calling potential employers.

Tons of people claimed that jobs simply weren’t found that way.

However, in my entire post-law school life, I have never gotten a job that was advertised. Of the five jobs I have worked since law school, not even one of those employers had posted a Help Wanted ad.

If I have such a strong history of finding unadvertised work, why was this method so controversial? To be fair, this method may not work in every industry, in every geographic location.

There are certain employers like federal agencies that must follow procedures for hiring. It is highly unlikely you’ll get an unadvertised job at this kind of employer.

But there are still plenty of situations where it’s possible to find unadvertised work.

Three Low-Stress Areas Of Law

March 24, 2021 By Hillary Vaillancourt 2 Comments

Three Low-Stress Areas Of LawAs a new attorney, I figured being stressed was part of the job, or I must be doing it wrong. How many fictional characters do we watch on TV or in the movies who are attorneys who are stressed out of their minds? And, I don’t know about you, but when I polled every attorney I knew about why they became attorneys, all of them brushed off the question and told me not to follow suit and become a lawyer too.

Plus, haven’t you heard that joke when someone introduces themselves as a “recovering” attorney?

It seems the legal profession is synonymous with stress, adrenaline rushes, and burnout. However, it doesn’t have to be. Here are three areas of law that are relatively low-stress.

The Only Three Supplies You Need As A 1L

August 12, 2020 By Hillary Vaillancourt Leave a Comment

The Only Three Supplies You Need As A 1LAs a kid, I loved back-to-school shopping. I loved finding fun pens, picking out a new backpack, or being able to personalize new folders. Even as an adult, I get giddy seeing the back-to-school supplies stocked in stores. Just for fun, I still buy a new pack of pens every August when the school supplies are set aside.

But, the cost of school and office supplies can really add up. Law school tuition is expensive enough without having to worry about how to afford all the extra supplies to write briefs, read all of your assignments, and fulfill your assignments.

There are ways to minimize the cost of your school supplies, however, while still providing the resources you need to excel in law school. [Read more…] about The Only Three Supplies You Need As A 1L

Trusts 101

June 17, 2020 By Hillary Vaillancourt Leave a Comment

Trusts 101When I went to law school I was certain that I would never, ever, not in a million years need to know anything about trusts. I was going to be an advocate for animals or children or the poor. What would I need to know about how to shelter a lot of money?

Well, it turns out I was wrong about a lot of things. First off, as a law student, you should plan to learn anything and everything—especially if it will be tested on the bar exam. Second, you just never know what you may end up needing to know. Even if I had become an advocate for animals in my professional life, fundraising for nonprofits requires some knowledge about trusts and other giving vehicles. Plus, trusts can be used for all kinds of purposes, not just sheltering money. [Read more…] about Trusts 101
