What’s Your Alternative? Uncovering Alternative Career Paths For The Law Firm Skeptic

June 23, 2017 By Christen Morgan Leave a Comment

Alternative CareersAre you:

  • About to graduate from college and contemplating going to law school, but holding off on signing up for the LSAT because you don’t want to be another lawyer subject to a 9 to 11 (yes 11 not 5), career in a stuffy law firm?
  • A 1L who has often times daydreamed about the possibility of raking in a six-figure salary at a law firm but you remain drawn to pursuing your lifelong goal of advocating for the indigent or even representing your country in a government career?
  • A 2L, 3L or recent graduate who was certain about your decision to work in a law firm but after experiencing a summer or maybe even several months working in this context you’ve come to realize that this isn’t what you expected and need a way out?

Should I Get A Part-Time Job in Law School?

May 31, 2017 By Christen Morgan Leave a Comment

Should I get a Part-Time Job?It’s a well-known fact that law school is expensive. Between the high cost of tuition and the ridiculously high cost of each thousand-page case book, it’s pretty tough to cover those required expenses and also cover the basic necessities that you need for your daily life. During your first year, it was probably worth it to take on a bigger loan so you could dedicate all your time to your course preparation. But now that you’re becoming a pro at this whole law school thing, you’re probably wondering, “should I cut back on loans and take on a part-time job instead?” Well, my answer to this is, it depends. Although law school is expensive, a part-time job isn’t for everyone. Yes, you may feel like you’re managing your time well now, but you should really consider if throwing a job into this equation will throw off the schedule that has aided in your success. However, maybe you do better when you have a busy schedule.

It’s common knowledge that some people work best when under pressure. In short, I guess I’m trying to say that getting a part-time job should be based on your personality and lifestyle. But what does that even mean? Answer these three questions. It should make your decision a lot easier: [Read more…] about Should I Get A Part-Time Job in Law School?

May 24, 2017 By Christen Morgan Leave a Comment

Help! It's Already Summer and I Don't have a Summer JobHow did this happen? After spending an entire academic year hunting relentlessly for a summer job, you’re still unemployed. The reality is that many students (more than you think) are currently facing this same struggle. Additionally, the reality is that summer is not yet over, heck depending on when you’re reading this, it may not even have started yet. Therefore, there’s still time on the clock to turn things around. So keep reading, and let’s find you a summer job. [Read more…] about Help! It’s Already Summer and I Still Don’t Have A Summer Job!

Should I Do a Law School Extracurricular?

Ahead Of The Curve: Take The Money Or Take a Gamble? Should a Scholarship Determine Which Law School You Attend?

Take the Money or Take a Gamble? Should a Scholarship Determine Which Law School I Attend?Welcome to Ahead of the Curve, our new series for incoming 1Ls. We’re getting lots of questions about what law school to attend, how to pay for it, and what people can be doing now to set themselves up for success in law school. Let’s face it, law school is expensive. The average debt of a law school graduate is over $100,000. Therefore, it’s definitely understandable that as your law school acceptance letters roll in, you may find yourself torn. You didn’t mentally prepare yourself for that acceptance to Yale or Harvard, nor did you prepare yourself for the full-ride scholarship you received to Tier-2 University School of Law. The problem is, Yale didn’t offer you any scholarship money, while Harvard only offered you $10,000. Considering the impending debt that could be coming your way upon graduation, I can understand the temptation you feel to attend a lower-ranked school that gave you a full scholarship. But despite this temptation, let’s be real, who wants to pass up on the prestige of attending the best law school in the country? Well if you find yourself in this predicament, pause for a moment and pat yourself on the back because this is a great problem to have. Nevertheless, it’s a problem that needs to be solved.
