Got A Job Offer? Not Sure If You Should Take It? Here are Four Tips to Help You Decide

August 4, 2017 By Christen Morgan 2 Comments

Post Graduate Job OfferSo your summer internship is coming to an end and just a few days ago you found yourself in an interesting situation. Your supervisor pulled you into her office, thanked you for all your hard work and offered you a post-graduate position with the firm. On the outside, you reacted as though you were overcome with excitement and gratefulness. However, as she went into detail about the practice group you would be placed in and the six-figure salary you’d be receiving, you find yourself internally struggling. This moment is by all definition the core reason you went to law school, but you can’t help but feel displeased and unfulfilled. I mean you learned a lot this summer and enjoyed every minute of each social event you participated in, but for some reason, this job just doesn’t feel like the right fit. It looks great on paper, but the thought of being in this position for the foreseeable future immediately places a knot in your stomach. So what do you do?

First off, I know you’re probably feeling some guilt in this moment. Getting a post-grad offer at the end of summer is a privilege that very few students experience, so how dare you treat this as a serious problem. But there’s no reason to feel guilt about this! You’re absolutely justified in assessing this decision very carefully. Before making this decision, it’s extremely important that you evaluate whether this is a commitment that you want to take on.

So, before you accept, here are four things you should do:

Caution! Don’t Restrict Your Job Search to the OCI Process

July 21, 2017 By Christen Morgan Leave a Comment

Caution! Don't Restrict Your Job Search to the OCI ProcessSummer is finally upon us! Yes, the season of music festivals, shorts and sandals has pierced its way through nine months of frigid law school despair and now you can finally let your hair down and begin feeling the sand in between your toes. While this is mostly true for the average student, law students know that while they can indulge in the excitement of this beautiful season, they can only let their hair down midway because they still have to either secure their next summer job or a postgraduate position during this time. So how do they do this? Most students have the misconception that the primary means by which they can secure their next job is through the dreaded On Campus Interview (OCI) process. Now, while this is a popular way to secure a position, especially if you’re looking for a big law job, don’t lose sight of the many alternative job hunting methods that you can utilize this summer. OCI’s are just one of the many steps you can take. Unfortunately, many students rely solely on this method and end up disappointed at the end of summer when it doesn’t work in their favor (yes, I’m talking about myself). But fortunately enough, I already suffered this mistake so that I can forewarn you about this misconception and point you to the many options available. So grab your sun tan, grab your laptop and let’s make a summer job search plan! [Read more…] about Caution! Don’t Restrict Your Job Search to the OCI Process

July 14, 2017 By Christen Morgan Leave a Comment

Alternative Career Series: How to Become a Public Interest AttorneyHey Guys! Welcome back to the Alternative Career Series. Today I’ll be covering the final topic within this series, “How Do I Become a Public Interest Attorney?”

These are the attorneys who dedicate their career to serving the public by providing pro bono legal services to the indigent. These attorneys also work in law reform organizations, advocating zealously to change erroneous laws that negatively impact a large number of people. Public interest attorneys serve the public in a variety of settings such as within a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, a public interest law firm or even a private law firm dedicated to taking pro bono cases. These are the attorneys that have fought especially in recent times to positively impact millions of people. They have made strides within civil rights, and they have made the goals of many social movements an actual reality. These are the attorneys who, for very little compensation, may have pushed aside their individual comforts to change the world. [Read more…] about What’s Your Alternative? What’s Your Alternative? Uncovering Alternative Career Paths For The Law Firm Skeptic: How Do I Become an In-House Attorney?

Alternative Career Series: How to become an in-house attorney.“How Do I Become An In-House Attorney?”

Hey Guys! Welcome back to our Alternative Career Series. Today we’ll be covering possibly one of the more popular alternatives to a traditional law firm position, the in-house attorney. These are the attorneys typically hired by a corporation to represent that sole entity in all of its legal matters. These attorneys are essentially the glue for a corporation, ensuring that they’re in compliance with the law on every business deal. These attorneys also frequently serve as the root behind the existence of that very corporation, drafting the contracts and overseeing the transactions that built the corporation from the ground up.

If you’re a law student reading this you’re probably thinking that an in-house career is a long way off, something that will only become a possibility way down the road after several years of practice. Now, while there is some truth to this thought pattern, as in-house jobs aren’t always readily available to entry level attorneys, don’t allow this thought to restrict your dreams. An in-house job right after law school is possible! Also, if you’re currently a post graduate looking to transition into the in-house field, this is most certainly accessible. Although it was several years ago, I remember the summer before my first year of law school all too clearly. By the time August 2013 rolled around and my law school classes were days away, I thought I had already mastered everything I needed to be prepared. Boy was I wrong! The weekend before classes began I recall receiving a flood of emails from my professors with a ton of reading assignments for the upcoming week. Each email with a stern warning that we would be delving straight into the material on the first day and straight into cold-calling, so we needed to be prepared.

That weekend I had no idea what I was doing during my class preparation. I spent hours reading and re-reading just one case and still remained confused after several reviews. Unfortunately, this confusion and inefficient preparation continued throughout my first semester until I finally figured out what worked best for me. By my second semester, I was able to prepare for classes in about half the time I was taking my first semester. By my third year of law school, my ability to prepare for class had improved so much that I was able to prepare between the quick breaks my class and work schedule permitted.
