About Carolyn Negrin

Carolyn Negrin was a law school and bar exam tutor for Law School and Bar Exam Toolbox.

After graduating with honors from UCLA, she passed the CPA exam (top 3%) and worked in Audit for PricewaterhouseCoopers. She later transferred to a Litigation Support Services group and went on to pursue a law degree.

Carolyn earned her JD at Loyola Law School, where she continued her academic success by earning an academic scholarship and graduating Cum Laude as a Sayre MacNeil Scholar, Order of the Coif, and a member of the St. Thomas Moore Honor Society. She was also an Articles Editor of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review.

After practicing family law for Kolodny & Anteau, and later representing a state agency, Carolyn decided to share her exam taking skills and turned her attention to helping students pass the bar exam.

What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

June 2, 2017 By Carolyn Negrin Leave a Comment

What do you want to be when you grow up?This past fall I was speaking to my babysitter who had just graduated from law school. She went to a tier 2 law school, took the bar exam and was waiting for her bar results. She did not do any internships, clerkships or legal work during law school. Her grades were fine but not stellar. This might be obvious to some of you. But I am going to be honest. She did not put herself in the best position to get a job after law school. And now she’s 24 years old with no practical work experience.

I also wish somebody had told me to think about what kind of law job I would like BEFORE law school. I am a mom of two, and we started our family approximately 5 years after we graduated. I completely stopped working for several years to care for my young children because, at the time, it didn’t make sense to continue working. In hindsight, before law school, I should have spoken to as many working moms as I could find in the areas I was interested in and figured out which areas were ideal for part-time work, or more family-friendly anyway. Many of you have had those hindsight moments, but we all know by this point in our lives that being forward-looking is much more productive. How to Maximize Your Sleep

March 8, 2017 By Carolyn Negrin Leave a Comment

How to Maximize your SleepI think by this point in your legal career (law school graduates and beyond), you all know how important sleep is for your body. Besides making you feel better, sleep has proven benefits such as improving your memory, focus, lowering stress (or aiding in your general ability to cope) and helping you to stay healthy. Your brain actually regenerates itself and creates new pathways for learning while you sleep and you can actually think and learn better when you are well rested. As soon as I became a parent, I became even more interested in what made for the best slumber. If my babies couldn’t sleep, then that meant my husband or I were awake. If they were asleep, then I could rest. Looking back, I don’t think I was ever really able to appreciate my sleep before I had children (and yes, that includes when I was studying in law school and for the bar exam). If I studied until 3 AM, then I was often able to compensate by sleeping in later. However, most of the tips I learned in mommy and me class can help all of us get some more sleep.

Since you are in law school, either finals or the bar exam are right around the corner so now’s the time to maximize your sleep. Here are some of the things I learned: [Read more…] about How to Maximize Your Sleep

Food for Thought: 10 Tips for Better Nutrition in Law School

December 12, 2016 By Carolyn Negrin 1 Comment

When I started college I didn’t know the difference between proteins and carbohydrates or which foods kept me full the longest, or gave me the most energy. One night before finals, I cooked pasta with a homemade tomato sauce and vegetables. Then I packed up my books and went to the library to study. No sooner than I was sitting down to study at the library I started feeling hungry. I didn’t understand how I could be hungry so soon. 10 Reasons to Exercise in Law School

November 9, 2016 By Carolyn Negrin Leave a Comment

As you begin law school you will face some of your toughest academic challenges yet. And unless you are one of the lucky few (I was not) who can get by on 6 hours or less of sleep (which I don’t recommend trying in law school), it will be exhausting and stressful. This is a perfect time in your life to continue any exercise routines that you have been doing, and if you don’t have one, then there is no better time to start.
