Life is stressful. Life as a law student? Impossible. Law school is this crazy adventure that individuals take on who aspire to be lawyers. The typical law student’s life is stressful, overwhelming, and unmanageable. What if I told you there was a way to make your life more manageable? Let me introduce you to modern technology – cell phones! Phones and other hand-held devices have numerous resources to help make people’s lives easier. So here are some apps that I use that may also help improve your life!
The best way to improve your life as a law student is to be organized and manage your time. You are limited as to the amount of hours in a day, days in a week, weeks in a month and so on. Your time is precious, and you should put a value on it. The best way to ensure you are not wasting time is to have an organization system. Personally, I am a super type-A, organized person. I do my best work when I have a clean home, clear head, and organized thoughts. Applications on your phone/handheld device can help you improve your life by organizing and managing your time.
Access Your Documents with a Cloud System (Google Drive and Dropbox)
Do you ever just want to look at your notes without having to lug out your laptop and find your evidence outline during the time between classes? What if I told you can easily access your documents on your phone for a quick glance or edit? That is where a cloud system comes in. Personally, I use both Google Drive and Dropbox. I keep all my documents on these systems so that 1) they are easily accessible and 2) they are backed-up in case my computer crashes.
Sleep Better! (Sleep as Android)
A great way to improve your life is to sleep. I know that sounds funny since you are a law student and sleep is hard to come by. However, you will be more effective throughout the day if you get a proper amount of sleep each night. One app that I have found is Sleep as Android. This app monitors your sleep cycle and wakes you up during your lightest point in your sleep cycle. This helps you wake-up easier and feel less groggy so you can get a jump start on your day. It will also alert you at night when you need to go to sleep in order to get the best slumber. And for those of us that are terrible at getting out of bed, there are settings that force you to get up and take a picture of something in your house.
Get to Class/Work Quicker! (Waze)
Unfortunately where I go to school, it is difficult to find affordable housing close to campus. With the added bonus of having a law firm job in a completely different county and my fiance’s job in another, I have to commute at least a half hour to work or school each day. Although I know where I am going, I always pull up Waze before I head out in the morning. I live in the Detroit metro area so my travel can vary by a significant amount of time. Waze helps route me around all the traffic and is pretty accurate in estimating how long it will take me to get to my destination.
Never Forget Anything (Google Assistant)
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have your own personal assistant? Introducing Google Assistant, your very own personal assistant to help you with all of your organizational needs! You want to write down a grocery list? Tell Google. You need to remind yourself to text your mom when you get home from class? Tell Google. You want to know what is on your schedule for the day? Ask Google. You need a mood booster? Talk to Google. If you get a Google Home, you have the added bonus of telling Google to do things for you on your phone OR by shouting “Hey Google” in your living room.
Make Your Life Easier!
Do you have to let your phone run your life? No. Can your phone help you get through the week? Yes. Is it okay to ask for help from your phone and apps? YES. There is nothing wrong with trying to make your life easier by using technology to your advantage. Think about what aspect of your life needs to be improved and search for an app that can help with that. Technology has advanced to make your life easier, so there is no shame in using it! And just because these apps work for me does not mean there aren’t other apps that could be better for you. So get searching friends and give yourself a break!
